A Sincere Apology to The Local Community
Let's try this again. We are sorry.
It is imperative that the Bundy Museum of History and Art retains an open dialogue with the community, as it has been our goal since day one to serve all people of the Greater Binghamton Area.
There has been much discourse online in regards to recent actions taken by the museum, and in the spirit of transparency and supporting the community we aim to serve we have been receiving and digesting your feedback. We are not perfect people nor a perfect organization, but we do hope to do our best in correcting any wrong doings made on our part. In inviting critique, we hope to maintain an open dialogue in how to better operate as an organization and community event space.
We have removed our posts regarding Wegmans and in doing so have already contacted the company, and made them aware of the situation and where we stand. We are actively working on returning the donation made and will not be working with Wegmans in the future as we understand the harm the company has perpetuated against our local BIPOC community. We are truly sorry for the harm we caused in accepting that donation and the subsequent posts we made in appreciation of the donor, given their past actions.
In regards to the African art in storage, a meeting was held with concerned community members today in preparation for an undertaking of cleaning and better storing these pieces. We agree with criticisms of the way we have handled and stored these items in recent years. We are a small museum in financial crisis and are inviting volunteers interested in taking part in the restoration of the art to join in and come see the pieces with context more intimately. This will be a project headed by members of our local BIPOC community, supported by our museum staff. Some of these pieces will be on display on 12.30.23 during the New Years Bash presented by Melissa “Melly Mel” Gomez of MV Promotional and Management Services.
We'd like to thank the community for allowing us to get this right. We understand there is still work to be done, and that these solutions are not one-size-fits-all. But we're intent on preserving and fortifying our commitment to the community we serve. We'd like to once again extend our sincerest apologies for our initial mishandling of this situation.
We thank you for your time, energy, and input as it makes the Bundy Museum of History and Art a better and more welcoming space for everyone.
We as an organization are dedicated to enriching our community, and we house a number of nonprofits and organizations on our campus aligned with that same goal. Concerns and feedback can always be directed to any of our social media platforms, as well as by phone or email. Contact information will be left below for your convenience, and we look forward to hearing from you.
