Artist Statement:
Ever since I learned about film photography in community college, I’ve taken a liking to and appreciation for the medium. Not just because of how it looks, but the work behind it. Rather than seeing an instant image on modern digital cameras, the film used in the analog cameras must be developed through a machine (or by hand) with certain types of chemicals, depending on the film type before you can see the image you took. All that work to see the photos you took always fascinated me for some reason.

Along with film photography, I’ve also taken an interest in Stop Motion Animation in the past. It was never as serious as photography is for me, but it has always been something I found interesting because of the similar reason why I enjoy film: The style and work behind it.

Most stop motion films take anywhere from months to years to finish because of the amount of detail needed for each character’s movement. The popular Tim Burton movie ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ took 3.5 years to complete due to the length of time stop motion takes as each second of the film used 24 frames for the characters and the environmental movements in each scene.

For Life in Motion, I wanted to combine these interests into things I see in my everyday life. From a time lapse of a natural subject throughout the day, to something as simple as environmental movement in the city streets, each short animation segment is made of 3-5 frames of photography. The segments will be displayed throughout the gallery in order as well.

Artist Bio:
Kaitlyn Hession is a photographer who has worked in many different fields of photography, ranging from portraiture and landscapes to photojournalism and film. One of her most notable projects, The Vacant Society, has been on display in the past in the Binghamton Photo Gallery and in the 3rd Floor Gallery of the Bundy Museum.

For Life in Motion, Kaitlyn will be combining two of her long time interests: Film Photography and Stop Motion Animation. She will do this by making a sequence of animations using film exposures shot on a half frame camera. The photos were taken throughout everyday life from Hession’s perspective.

Kaitlyn Hession received her Associates of Science from Tompkins Cortland Community College, where she majored in Photography. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in New Communication Media from the State University of New York at Cortland. During her time at these institutions, Hession’s work was displayed in the colleges’ art galleries and in a local media outlet where she interned as a journalist.
