Artist Bio:
Bruce Wood, a Binghamton local, has been making art for the last 24 years while overcoming disabilities that began in his early childhood. At age 3, Bruce began having epileptic seizures that caused several learning disabilities and the loss of his voice box between the ages of 5 and 14. He put in years of hard work to learn to speak again, and in that time, also learned he could visualize things in a much deeper way. He describes this ability to visualize as seeing a movie scene in his head, and he makes those scenes come to life with his artwork. Bruce’s disabilities have led to his creative way of thinking and his unique, mixed-media art style.
His artistic journey began with a Neil Diamond concert in 2005. Bruce saw frog figurines at a merch table at the show, and while he couldn’t buy one, he realized maybe he could make one. These frog figurines became a source of inspiration for his first project. Bruce recreated the figurines in his own way using his ability to visualize in detail exactly what he wanted them to look like. Where someone sees a birdhouse, Bruce sees a concert stage. A simple piece of medical equipment becomes spotlights for that stage. Soon enough, all the pieces came together and Bruce had his first diorama: a Neil Diamond frog concert! Over the years, Bruce has created many intricate dioramas using this process. He visualizes a scene in his mind, brings together every day items, and creates a fun, physical representation to share with his audience.
