Artist Statement:

I’ve never really approached photography with a clear plan or specific intention. Looking through my photos, I realized that the subjects of my photography, which I was drawn to in particular, are often going through something. They look tired, lost, or quietly in pain. And I think that’s because I see parts of myself in them.

For a long time, I’ve struggled with my mental health, feeling out of place, weighed down, and unsure of where I belong. But even in my darkest moments, what kept me grounded were the people around me. People are complex, messy, beautiful beings, each with their own hardships and daily struggles. That quiet resilience is what makes them my favorite subjects to photograph.

Recently, my best friend has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, which could leave her paralyzed. She lives in Mexico, where she has no real access to health care or even an actual mattress to sleep on. I’ve felt completely helpless. I don't ever want there to be a day that I wake up and she just disappears. My life is just better with her in it. All the money from these photos is going directly to her. So she can sleep in a bed without fear of getting attacked by scorpions, so she can not starve herself for weeks on end just to pay for medication. So that I can help her in any small way I can.

This show is dedicated <italicsTo All Those Struggling. italics> Wherever you are, whoever you are, know that someone out there cares. Even if it’s just the quiet compassion of a stranger or the fleeting warmth of a moment captured in a photo, you are not alone. You are loved. Always.

Artist Bio:

Alex is a hobbyist photographer from Queens, New York, with over a decade of experience behind the camera. Her work primarily focuses on portraiture and street photography, inspired by the vibrant energy and diversity of New York City. With over 8 million people in one place, she’s fascinated by the idea that each individual has a unique story, and she aims to capture just a glimpse of that through her lens.

Her creative journey began in childhood, exploring various artistic mediums including drawing and painting. A longtime admirer of film and animation, transitioning into photography and eventually film felt like a natural evolution of her artistic voice.

In 2024, Alex earned her Associate’s Degree in Cinema from SUNY Binghamton, where she had the opportunity to sharpen her skills in both film and photography. She continues to grow and learn, especially when it comes to the more technical aspects of the craft. Her passion for visual storytelling is what drives her forward. It’s the love of the art form that keeps her inspired and motivated to keep creating.
